A series about African Warrior Women is in development

The hype around Black Panther does not seem to be slowing down any time soon!

Sony Pictures Television have announced they will be developing a television show about African female warriors with pan-regional African broadcaster studio Ebony Life. The deal follows an agreement between the two companies, which will see Sony adapt gameshow The Dating Game for Ebony Life in Nigeria.

The Dahomey Amazons/Warriors of the Kingdom of Dahomey, present-day Republic of Benin, were an all-female front-line regiment. The group were made up of African women who started out as elephant hunters and protectors of their communities whilst their men were at war.

It is believed that the third king of Dahomey started the group, with his son developing the idea by creating a female bodyguard unit, arming them with muskets, machetes, and spears.

Records show that they began in the 17th century and were disbanded in 19th century after the French colonized the region.

Furthermore, the group are recognised as having forming the inspiration for the Dora Milaje, which is depicted in Black Panther and fronted by Danai Gurira.

The deal stricken by the two networks will also see them produce two other series, although details are still to follow. Development on the Dahomey Warriors project is expected to start immediately and it has been reported that Sony Pictures Television will distribute internationally.

Nigeria-based EbonyLife launched in 2013. It produces 1,000 hours of English-language content a year. Its first feature film, “Fifty,” was picked up by Netflix and released worldwide.

Speaking of the deal, Mo Abudu, the company CEO said:

'Ever since our launch in June 2013, our vision has always been to change the narrative about Africa and to tell our stories from our perspective.'

'Now we have the opportunity to bring the fascinating story of the Dahomey Warriors, and many others like it, to audiences around the world. It has been hard work getting here, but that’s what we are known for at EbonyLife. As I always say, ‘If you can think it, you can do it.'

It is not known when the series will air but here's to more representative TV shows and films across the diaspora.
